Corn starch in a cake mix?? Ask yourself Why?
I have been using this cake mix for a few years now and really liked it until I noticed the texture of the baked cake began to change, and where I usually had used one box to make one cake, I found that the cake was not rising any longer as before so I used two cake mixes to obtain the same results. So, this last time I made the vanilla cake, I noticed that the cake layers were very dense and not good at all. I read the ingredients on the box and saw that “corn Starch” and “wheat starch” were listed. I am a life long baker and cook and have never used any kind or form of “starch” in my baking. I will no longer be using these products for all of these obvious reasons. Back to scratch for me.

Not vegan without work!
Ordered this product specifically because it was advertised as a vegan product. Perhaps it is, however the first thing I read was in order to make it I would need 3 eggs, 1 cup milk & butter. Seriously? So the first thing I need to do is buy substitutes for all those products. Ripoff! Next time I’ll just buy Betty Crocker. It’s vegan too but just will need egg substitutes & water. A lot easier.Additional note:Was contacted by the company about my dissatisfaction. They offered to send me a replacement for my order. They also gave me suggestions about how to make the mix vegan. As an individual I appreciate a company that cares about its customers. I still believe that they should market their mix stressing its natural ingredients and it’s incredible chocolate flavor. It wouldn’t hurt to write vegan directions on the box either. Not all of us are as well versed at that conversation as others. Still, thank MissJones.

a great idea whose time has come - and this review goes for all her products - i'm too lazy to write a review for each.
I'm a label reader from way back. But I'm not a nut about it. It's important to me that packaged foods have no weird chemical ingredients, hydrogenated oils or trans fats. however, that's about as far as i go - i'm ok with sugar. whole wheat flour cakes and cookies are just awful - let's face it white flour makes better pastries - so i'm just fine with enriched white flower. Natural would be great - organic even better - but i don't really expect that. yet what a blessing it would be to get to the point where you could walk down any supermarket aisle and expect that what you pick up will have only good ingredients....it seems as if food manufacturers are starting to really try to offer more products with less synthetic ingredients. and that's to be applauded. we all know the less chemicals in our diet the healthier we will be - and it's cumulative. carcinogens are bad. we all know that now.enter miss jones and her crew. she's doing something great. i first read about her in my s.f. sunday paper. I bought her chocolate cake mix, white cake mix, chocolate frosting, vanilla frosting, and brownie mix. No bad chemicals. Everything was so easy to make and delicious. I bought cases of each because i like to have things in stock and have them on hand. they were so sweet to send me a "miss jones" spatula as a thank you gift.now to make a few suggestions to miss jones whom i hope keeps an eye on amazon too: the vanilla is just sweet. it needs some oomph some personality. i zested a few lemons and mixed it into both the vanilla cake and frosting - it was amazing! please suggest that on the labels. the chocolate cake mix...i added a half a bag os nestle chocolate chips. that was also amazing. the brownies i added a cup of chopped walnuts. but now for the frosting. it's not fun to spread on - needs to be more spreadable. i had to distribute small spoonfulls over the cooled cake and flatten them together with a wet spatula (thanks for which miss jones!) why does the worst criticism have to come last? because this IS a five star review. i am SO happy to have a clean ingredient, really good cake and brownie mix that is so easy to make. but the frosting is too waxy. the texture or "mouth feel" brings to mind crisco or maybe lard. don't get me wrong - it's still light years ahead of my having to make frosting from scratch. but i seem to remember from the days when i did bake a lot years ago (i even baked professionally). i remember old cook books featuring cake icing recipes that were mostly confectioner's sugar, butter, and milk (vanilla and a little salt of course) the texture was lovely and delicate. please miss jones check it out.

Quick, easy, and organic chocolate mug cake in the microwave in under 2 minutes!
I love mug cakes! I used to buy the Duncan Hines one, but they started incorporating whey in to all of their mug cakes. I have issues with my stomach and whey, so I am avoiding those mixes all together. I had allergy issues with Betty Crocker mixes and didn't care for the double chocolate taste of the Ghirardelli mug cakes.I found some tips online that said you could basically make mug cake out of any cake mix. I wondered if this would work on organic cake mixes, but I decided that it would be worth a try. I searched far and wide for an organic cake mix that did not contain Stevia or other artificial flavors.I was delighted to find Miss Jones Chocolate cake mix on Amazon. It checked off all of the boxes that I have to check off when purchasing a new type of cake mix, or any dessert mix for that matter:~No artificial sugar such as Stevia, which I have trouble processing due to stomach problems~Peanut free, I have a peanut allergy~Non-Gmo, I have allergy problems with genetically modified ingredients~No trans fats or hydrogenated oils, I'm currently dealing with high cholesterol and trying to behave, LOLThe ingredient list in the Miss Jones Chocolate Cake Mix is what I consider to be a "clean" ingredient list. In my book that means nothing I'm allergic to (I have dozens of allergies); nothing I can't pronounce; and no artificial colors or flavors. In addition the cake mix is organic and vegan.Allergy wise, the Miss Jones Chocolate Cake Mix warns of shared facilities with Egg, Milk, Soy, and Wheat. Amazingly enough none of those are things I am allergic to so I had no problems with this cake mix.Full ingredient list: Organic Cane Sugar; Organic Wheat Flour; Organic Cocoa Powder (processed with alkali); Organic Wheat Starch; Baking Powder (Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate; Baking Soda; Non-GMO Corn Starch; Monocalcium Phosphate); Cream Of Tartar; Baking Soda; Sea Salt; and Natural Vanilla Flavor.Price wise, I feel like Miss Jones Chocolate Cake Mix is expensive. Even when compared to mug cakes which are $2.99-$4.50 for four cakes, Miss Jones Chocolate Cake Mix gives you 3 full mug cakes for $6.55. Yes it's organic, and yes it's worth the price, it's just noteworthy.Onto the mug cake:To make Miss Jones Chocolate Cake in to a mug cake, I simply added 1/2 cup of the cake mix with 3 tablespoons of water and cooked on high in the microwave (1,200 watts) for 1 minute and 20 seconds. I don't actually bake mug cakes in a mug, I bake them in disposable Dixie bowls for easy cleanup. The result was a delicious, easy to make cake that I could make in the microwave like any brand of mug cake, only with better ingredients and no allergy worries on my part. Appearance wise the cake was fluffy and airy out of the microwave and did not appear to be dense or heavy in any way, shape, or form.Taste wise this is the best organic chocolate cake that I've ever had, and I've tried a lot of different brands. You would not know this is organic cake unless you made it yourself or saw the box sitting on the counter, it is that good. I am an extremely picky eater and I LOVE this cake so much.I will definitely be buying more Miss Jones Chocolate Cake Mix soon. I'm a little bummed I didn't order enough for the weekend as I was not thinking it would work and was quite surprised when it did. No eggs or milk required. You can make it with milk (according to what I read online), but I never have.
