straight forward and works well
This was pretty straight forward to use and I've done the first step which has worked well. I wanted to choose stones at random from the countryside and so far it's working. You need to choose igneous rather than sedimentary rock but beyond that most things produce interesting results. There are three steps and each one takes a week so the machine will be running for a long time. Initially the machine is very noisy and although I don't mind this, in a small house it could be a problem. If you've got a garage or shed with electricity that's probably best. I've only got to the second step so far but if the results are as good as I think, I'll be collecting stones and using this on and off for years. I chose the biggest machine and I'm glad I did - if you're going to spend 4 weeks getting results you want a large number of stones at the end.

Not fit for purpose
I have three of these tumblers which are cheaper elsewhere if you look around, and unfortunately I bought them all with a week or two of each other when I'd got the rock tumbling bug - which is why I didn't learn from the mistake of buying the first one. Every single one of the machines leaks, which is hardly surprising when you see how the lid is fixed in place, with an elastic band. How anyone thought this would be a good idea is beyond me, 5lb of rock and water sloshing around and around, with a rubber lid that effectively just sits on, and an elastic band to hold it there around its edge. Here in the UK, rock tumbling isnt as well known as it is in the US, where Lortone machines seem to rule the roost. The lids on those machines have a rubber inner layer, and then a metal lid that screws on firmly (and airtight), which apparently never fails. But these Beach machines should have been seen as a daft idea from the planning stage. And no, I did not over load my machines, I weighed the rocks and water going in, this is simply a stupid design fault that the makers need to address immediately. For the expense paid I would have expected something fit for purpose, but these are not fit for purpose. And while they leak slightly on first use, once you stretch the rubber band around the lid a few times the issue gets worse and worse. And oh, if you have to replace the barrel alone it's £70. Be warned.
